Retaining wall rock range
Transrock stocks several core product types suited to retaining wall construction. Each performs differently depending on wall height, design approach and the visual finish required.
Pink Mudstone
Pink Mudstone is a locally quarried stone with a natural squarish to rectangular shape and softer edges making it easy for contractors building retaining walls to work with. Its colour palette includes warm pinky-brown tones, creating a distinctive look that brings warmth and character to both traditional and contemporary landscapes. Its earthy variation ensures no two stones are identical, giving each project a unique visual appeal.
Honey Granite & Field Granite
Honey Granite is a field stone with squarish shapes, softened by rounded corners and edges. Its warm honey, cream, beige and greige tones create a timeless look that blends effortlessly into a wide range of landscapes. The soft edges make it a popular choice for environments where a more welcoming, approachable finish is desired, including schools and playgrounds. Available in a variety of sizes Honey Granite and Field Granite are suited to retaining structures where aesthetics are a priority, but a robust, civil-grade retaining solution is needed.
Little Desert Sandstone
Little Desert Sandstone is a locally quarried sedimentary stone, square to angular in form. Its natural palette features sandy beige and greige tones, delivering a warm and subtle colour variation that complements a wide range of outdoor settings. The stone’s texture and colour bring a natural desert-like quality, while also sitting comfortably in coastal or contemporary landscape designs.
Blue Mudstone
Blue Mudstone has a distinctive blue-grey base with subtle brown highlights, creating an earthy yet refined look. Naturally squarish to irregular in shape, it delivers strong visual impact and suits both contemporary and traditional landscape designs. Its colour palette works particularly well alongside modern greys (eg Dulux Monument), steel and timber finishes.
Coldstream
Coldstream Rocks are a locally quarried angular stone with natural interlocking characteristics, making it well-suited to dry-stack retaining walls and free-form construction. Its earthy tones – tan, ochre and grey – sit naturally in native Australian garden settings. A practical and cost-effective option for residential retaining walls where a natural, informal finish is the goal.
Iceberg Granite
Iceberg Granite, also known as Salt & Pepper Granite, is a quarried stone with naturally angular and irregular shapes. Its surface features a distinctive mix of white, grey and black speckling, giving it a clean, crisp appearance that works especially well in contemporary landscape designs.
Colac Basalt
Colac Basalt is a dark volcanic stone with a rugged, natural look. Its texture is typically more porous and aerated, giving the stone distinctive character with irregular shapes. When cut, Colac Basalt often reveals a striking blue tone, while in its natural form colours range from earthy browns through to deep blues and charcoal greys. Each piece carries unique variation, offering projects a one-of-a-kind finish.
Local Basalt
Local Basalt is a dense volcanic stone sourced from Melbourne and surrounding areas. It features a smooth, refined texture with fewer air pockets and more rounded edges than typical basalt. The colour profile is usually mid- to dark-grey, giving projects a clean, uniform look that works equally well in modern architecture and native landscape designs. Its consistent finish makes it an excellent choice for projects where strength and aesthetics both matter.
Sandstone Blocks
Sandstone Blocks are the standard product for formal, cut-block retaining walls. Uniform in dimension and straightforward to work with, sandstone is well suited to residential retaining wall construction where a clean, layered finish is required. Available in standard block dimensions. Suitable for mortared or dry-laid construction depending on wall height and engineering requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pink Mudstone, Honey Granite and Little Desert Sandstone are some of the most widely used retaining wall rock in Victoria.
Pink Mudstone is preferred where a contractor is looking to install a large project quickly and requires naturally blocky material that generally stacks well and has a striking deep purple colour.
Little Desert Sandstone creates a ‘wow’ factor, with its brighter white, cream and beige hues making the surrounding plant life really pop. This Rock works in well with the darker modern homes, and looks great in a beach environment.
Honey Granite is a good option that adds texture, but also more rounded edges making it more suitable for School environments. This stone is quarried from close to the surface, sometimes having naturally occurring mosses and lichen.
Coldstream rock is a popular alternative and given it’s quarried from close to Melbourne, has been used across Melbourne for generations. It fits in well to many Melbourne homes, with it’s natural bronze/Brown tones.
The right choice depends on wall height, structural requirements and the visual finish you’re after.Contact us and we can advise on the right product for your project.
Quantity depends on wall height, length and the size of stone used. For an accurate estimate, we recommend working with your landscaper to sketch out rough dimensions. Sometimes you won’t know until the contractor has started placing the rock whether there will be enough or if you’d like more. We work with you and your contractor to either provide more material, or cancel additional trucks that aren’t required based on your needs.
