Sawn rock

Transrock supplies sawn rock to landscapers, designers, contractors and residential customers across Melbourne and regional Victoria. Our sawn range takes natural stone and applies precision machine-cutting to produce seats, steps, pavers and outdoor furniture with consistent dimensions, clean profiles and a refined finish – while preserving the warmth and character of the original material.

Available in Honey Granite and Local Basalt, our sawn products are suited to residential gardens, civic spaces, schools, playgrounds and commercial landscaping where natural stone aesthetics and functional, installation-ready formats are both required.

What is sawn rock?

Sawn rock is natural stone that has been machine-cut to produce flat surfaces that we can use for paving, seats or steps. Unlike field stone or uncut boulders, sawn formats are consistent but their raw-edge or live-edge makes them unique. Sawn rock is great for steps, paving, seating and outdoor furniture where level surfaces, uniform dimensions and tight joints are important.

Our customers tell us that installing a staircase using our pre-cut steps can substantially cut down labour time when compared with building formwork, pouring and setting concrete ultimately saving costs across the project. The sawn process creates clean, flat cut stepping surfaces while retaining the natural texture on the face of the rock. The result is a product that combines the durability and warmth of natural stone with reliable heights to comply with compliance requirements.

Sawn rock range

Transrock stocks two sawn rock products suited to a range of residential, civic and commercial applications. Both are available for pick-up from our yard in Wonga Park or delivery across Melbourne and Victoria.

Honey Granite sawn rock

Honey Granite is a warm-toned field stone with honey, cream, beige and greige colouring. The stone has a naturally squarish form with softened edges and the sawn finish extends this into clean, functional profiles suited to steps, seats, pavers and tables.

The warm palette and sandy coastal tones make sawn Honey Granite particularly well suited to schools, public spaces and homes where a natural, raw-edged rock is best. Honey Granite really makes the greens in your garden pop. Despite its warmth and softness of tone, Honey Granite is a durable, hard-wearing material with granite-grade strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sawn rock has been machine-cut to produce flat surfaces and consistent dimensions — making it suitable for steps, paving and seating where level, uniform profiles are required. Natural field stone retains its original form and is used for rock gardens, retaining walls and decorative applications. Both are available from Transrock.

Yes. Both Honey Granite and Local Basalt are hard, durable stones that perform well in Melbourne’s variable climate. Local Basalt has been used in Melbourne’s roads and public spaces for generations. Honey Granite is granite-grade in hardness and highly weather-resistant. Neither requires sealing in standard applications, though sealing may be specified for certain paving applications.

Honey Granite sawn pavers are approximately 35mm thick. Sawn steps are approximately 170mm in rise. Local Basalt sawn pavers are 30mm and steps approx. 170mm.

Honey Granite can be drilled with specialist equipment — suited to water feature fittings, bollard sockets and similar applications. Local Basalt can be cut on site by landscapers with appropriate cutting equipment. Pre-cut formats for both stones are available to minimise on-site modification.
